Did I Miss The Cool Stuff

2006 Automotive Events

So far this year, EC Editors have participated in the 24 Hours of Lemons, The Bull Run and The Ferrari Panam. All of these events seemed to be very cool, and I didn't get to take part in any of them. That will be changing this year, but I have a feeling the events will too.

First the Panam, probably won't happen again. Ferrari took two brand new Ferrari 599s and drove them all over The Americas for one big media circus. It seems like a huge undertaking and I can't believe they are really that anxious to do it again. So I guess cross that one off.

The Bullrun seemed like loads of fun also. Driving from New York to LA in exotic cars, partying at every stop and living like rock stars for a week. So whats my problem with this one? Well I just can't see open road rallies like this one lasting that much longer. Every year I read about the participants doing dumber and dumber things on city streets and highways so I just have to think that eventually the authorities are going to squash this thing. I just hopes it lasts one more year and I don't end up in some jail cell in some tiny little town with one judge who is 4 days into a two month long vacation.

Lastly the 24 Hours of Lemons, an endurance race of 500 dollar vehicles. This thing sounds way too good to pass up, and I am sure Primedia will field at least one entry again next year. The problem as I see it is; the event is too cool, it got too much coverage and will probably be a victim of its own success. It was cool because it was so grass roots and had an underground feel to it. Now that everyone knows about it, the thing will turn into a circus. I am predicting that this year they will have to have some sort of lottery or just a first come first serve system for registration.

So what am I going to do? Well hopefully I can find enough cool stuff out there to do to keep myself entertained. I know there are a few other road rallies that are less well known, and I know some people are planning other events like Lemons, I guess I just have to be careful who I tell about them.
