In the September 2012 issue of european car magazine, which hits US newsstands about now, you will find a tract test of the latest software for the Volvo C30R T5 Design from Volvo’s Official Motorsport and Performance partner, Polestar.
The Swedish company offers the only software officially recognized by the manufacturer and, as such, it won’t affect your new car warranty if fitted as new or to a used car. The programs are also available new on some R Design models, except the Volvo C30.
Polestar’s relationship to the C30 hatchback goes deeper than simply software, however. Several years ago it produced a 450hp AWD version of the car, famously painted in bright cyan blue. The concept was built to showcase Polestar’s ability and perhaps inspire Volvo to create some high performance models of its own.
If that was the case, it seems more persuasion might be needed because today in Gothenburg city center, at a race track owned by Polestar, and within miles of Volvo’s headquarters, a new concept car was unveiled.
Based on the S60 T6 AWD, the new concept again features the same stunning signature paint as well as a 500hp engine, custom bodywor, chassis and interior upgrades.
“We’re proud to present Polestar’s interpretation of the Volvo S60,” said Christian Dahl, founder and CEO of Polestar. “It’s a car developed with our own preferences in mind but we know these are shared by a group of active drivers”
The focus of development was to create a comfortable car with a high level of power and handling. As a result, the Volvo T6 engine was tuned to deliver a considerable increase in power and torque.
Claiming 500hp at 6500rpm and 420 lb-ft at 5500rpm, the improvements were achieved with cylinder head and combustion chamber modifications as well as a custom intake manifold and air intake system as well as a Garrett 3171 turbo on a custom manifold with a 3.5” Ferrita stainless steel exhaust system. A set of strengthened connecting rods were also specified to create a more robust assembly.
The chassis benefited from fully adjustable Öhlins suspension at each corner, making the car lower, while the Haldex all-wheel drive system was modified to improve traction.
Part of the development process was undertaken by Polestar’s own team of professional racing drivers, including Robert Dahlgren, who commented: “The Volvo S60 is a well sorted car from start but our concept car has the chassis, engine and transmission just the way we want it. The result is a huge leap forward in terms of handling and performance and is the most impressive street Volvo I’ve ever driven. Yet it has retained a genuine Volvo feel.”
